A typical gear head, I’ve been playing, buying, and selling for more than 4 decades. During that time, I’ve worked with numerous luthiers and learned much of the trade to take care of my own guitars and those precious to other players. Throughout this journey, I’ve developed a keen appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry that goes into each instrument, often spending countless hours discussing various techniques and materials with these skilled artisans. I work and perform out of my home studio, where I find solace and inspiration. My stable usually has 10 to 15 pieces, with 3 or 4 mainstays that get played weekly, each one holding a unique story and purpose in my musical endeavors. Most of them are Gretsch, known for their distinctive sound and style, and a couple of those have been in my hands for more than 20 years, each eliciting memories of countless performances and jam sessions. As a musician and musician’s friend, I’ve bought and sold more than 250 guitars of all brands, shapes, and sizes—played them all at least a little—and miss most of them every time I sell one, often reflecting on the different moments and connections they represent, making it difficult to part with such an integral part of my musical journey.
